Confederate Ball, June 5, 1954

These photos are of the Confederate Ball, held in the BHS gym on June 5th, the night before the re-enactment of the BCR battle in 1954. These are some that Larry Johnson sent to be included in the" week in photos" of the battle. Some well-known local people can be recognized. A band from Memphis provided the music for the ball.

Simon and Mary Tom Gordon opened the 1954 Confederate Ball sitting on a bicycle built for two and crooning:

Daisy, Daisy, give your answer, do.
I'm half crazy all for the love of you.
It won't be a stylish marriage.
I can't afford a carriage.
But you'll look sweet
upon the seat
of a bicycle built for two.

Great picture of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Baker in their prime. He still looks scary.

Oh, yes he does look scary. Is he the first "terrorist" we knew?
Great photos, Larry.
The lady that married Jones? in the top photo - I forgot her name. She really rang my bell. She was beautiful.

Her name, I believe, was Jennifer.

Is the man on the right in the top shot Fred Perminter?
Who is the man beside Miriam Baker's left?
The cute Betty Rutherford was one of the belles of the ball that evening thanks for that photo.

I really tried to sharpen the photos of the crowd in the gym to see if we could recognize anyone, but they were in very low resolution, and was unable to get it to stay in perspective when enlarging. Sorry.

I think you are right about the name Jennifer "Jenny" Jones. I am not sure, either, but it sounds right.

That is Fred Parmenter, hope that is the correct spelling.

I can easily make out Mert Phillips in pic 4. He is in uniform, standing with his head in line with the xylophone on the bandstand.

Couldn't possibly be Mert's ears that gave him away.

10-4 on the ears! not being critical, but that was the cue that the writer saw...

am enjoying these photos and stories, keep it up, Larry. i enjoy your website.

Mert was elected "cutest" or some such at both BHS and NEMJC so the ears never hurt his chances like they didn't Clark Gable's prospects.
